Believed to be the oldest home in Oakland County, and one of the oldest surviving houses in the state. The Millerd House was built by Nathaniel Millerd in 1827. Nathaniel was a leader in the new community. He sold merchandise from this homebefore there were stores in the area and was also Deacon of the Stoney Creek Baptist Church, the first church in Avon Township.
The Stoney Creek Masonic Lodge was organized in 1828. Lodge meetings were held in the Millerd Houseuntil 1844. Although Masonry was suspended in the state from 1829 to 1840, Daniel Taylor maintained the lodge and kept the light of Masonry burning.
In 1844 members dedicated the first Masonic Temple in the state on Mt. Moriah in Stoney Creek Village. Inb 1853 the Temple moved to Main Street Rochester. Today the Temple is located in the old Methodist Church on Walnut Street in Rochester.
